Hi Misskorang,
I cried today, on Father’s Day. I’m 28years old and I can’t believe I cried again today on Father’s Day. Father’s day always makes me cry.
According to my mom, my dad won a lottery the day I was born, my mom supported him with all his savings and he traveled abroad. I was seven months old when my dad traveled. I’ve never seen my dad in real life before but I have his contact.
We eventually heard about my father for the first time when I was in JHS. I was happy to hear that my father was alive. At that time my mom had remarried and we were living with my step dad.
Misskorang, I called my step dad today to thank him but I have decided not to call my dad although my mom spoke to me yesterday to call him.
My step dad wasn’t a saint, he mistreated me to the point that I lost my self esteem. But I am grateful to him because I believe I am where I am because of him. We were living in the village, it was after he got married to my mom that we moved to the city. Most of the friends I had in the village are now mothers of three and four children.
I am educated because of my stepdad. My stepdad took me through my JHS education and I’m still grateful for that. At least he gave us a house to live in and I sold all kinds of things to see myself through SHS. But you see my dad, I have forgiven him. In fact I’ve forgiven both of them but I feel broken. There was a time I needed money to go to the hospital and I begged my dad for one hundred cedis. He told me I was a stupid girl and rather sent my step sister over four thousand cedis for her fees. My dad had children with about three women before leaving Ghana. I sometimes blame my mom within my heart for her choice of a man, for the kind of father she gave me,
Growing up I only needed a father figure in my life, it wasn’t about money, but my dad could go three years without hearing from us and it didn’t bother him. He didn’t care, he couldn’t be bothered, that is why father’s day makes me cry. I am always reminded of the father who didn’t want me.
He now wants a father-daughter relationship with me because I’m abroad. Because he has realized that the rejected stone has become the cornerstone.
I believe not having a father in my life made me do certain things I wouldn’t have done if I had him. I wish I was raised by both parents. I’m currently married, and I literally begged my husband today never to neglect our children no matter what happens in our marriage.
I know I need therapy, I will go for one soon, I need to let go.
MissKorang Says:
Please know I empathize with you, and i know many will too.
My prayers and thoughts are with you today. I am sending you and everyone who feels sadness on a day like Father’s Day loads of prayer and positive energy. Whatever the reason for the wound and the broken heart, I pray you find love, the kind that heals, protects and provides.
I am happy to hear you say you’re considering therapy and working towards healing, I am so proud of you. Give your mental and emotional health all the attention it deserves, put you first, heal the hurt and when you are ready, please confront your father. It may surprise you to hear his story.
