In memory of my late dad, I come bearing gratitude. To a special daddy in heaven, words can’t express how grateful I am to you.
I have plenty of fond memories of my father, but the one I want to talk about is how keen dad was about my schooling. He would always go extra lengths to make sure my school fees were paid.He didn’t have much, he struggled to pay my way through school, but he did it anyway.
I remember going to high school with my shoulders held up high not knowing my fees were paid by word of mouth, not physical cash. Those days, a first year student couldn’t be admitted and assigned a house and a dormitory without paying their fees first. But my dad did that with ease. He spoke to the people in charge, gave them his word, and they let me in. Someone might call it bragging but I know we had limited options and my father did what he had to do.
Someone talked of his dad being unlucky but when it comes to my dad ,he was on top of that hierarchy; unlucky. He ventured into timber, it yielded nothing, he went into importation ,it yielded nothing, he got into business and my mum had to invest the little she had yet nothing came out of it.
When it was time to go to the University , I was supposed to report on September 1st, dad told me, “Pack your stuff we are going today.” I waited the whole day ,no show the next day, nothing . Three days later, he managed to send me to school.
One afternoon my elder sister asked if I had paid my fees. I said I had, then she asked if I knew how dad got the money, I said no. That was when I found out, my father had taken a loan and he had even been attacked for non-payment by his creditors.Eventually it was paid. Dad had to go through a lot of humiliation for us and just as he was about to enjoy the fruits of his labor he was involved in an accident.
We love him but i think God loves him more. So in memory of my dad, I just want to acknowledge and appreciate him.
My dad , my hero.
I just wished you were here to see how grateful I am. I wish I were not writing this in my dad’s memory but to celebrate him alive. I am the lady I am today because of you, dad.
Much love.
