Our family has stumbled upon something really awesome this summer; a free Christian soccer camp! It started off as a paid week-long soccer camp organized by Beyond The Walls Community Church, and coached by the kindly Pastor, Dave Nickodemus, youth outreach leader, Mike Hendricks and a number of wonderful young people who volunteered to help coach and teach. I was more than glad I signed up my kids because that camp turned out to be a beautiful, diverse community of families; Asians, Hispanics, African-Americans, Caucasians, all brought together for the single purpose of nurturing young minds and bodies.
The success of the original week-long soccer camp prompted parents and coaches to decide to keep the camp going for free. And that brings us to what has now become a free soccer camp for kids of all ages, led by the ever energetic Mike Hendricks.
Kids get to do varied activities, from yoga, to aerobics, to obstacle courses, relay races, soccer matches and many more. They learn to follow direction, share with their peers, and exercise their minds, bodies and spirit.
Since this is a free camp, parents are encouraged to pitch in and contribute in whichever way they’re able. You may contribute bottles of water, snacks, paper towels or your time to help make this community initiative a success and worth the kids’ while.
So consider this, rather than take your kid(s) to the park to play by themselves, you may want to bring them to join an organized community of people, where they will meet and play with their peers and learn about God’s love, service and community.
Mike and Pastor Dave intend to keep the camp going all summer (2021), all they need are families that are interested in participating and willing to support. And quite frankly after the daunting year we’ve all had to live through, a community like this is worth contributing to.
The camp starts at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 12:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday at Black Forest Regional Park. And I promise you, you cannot beat Mike’s energy and love for children. So come on in, meet people, have fun and enjoy!
