The Lazy Hen
“The reward of the lazy is empty hands. The choices you make today determines your world tomorrow. Sow today, and reap tomorrow. Work today, rest tomorrow. Choose wisely today, so you have little or no regrets tomorrow. Make hay whiles the sun shines, if you squander today’s sunshine you may encounter a rainy day tomorrow.” Hawk pounded these words of wisdom into Hen.
Hawk and Hen were very good friends. They lived together, worked the same fields together and played together. Hawk worked hard, was diligent in her choices and thought wisely through everything he did. She invested her earnings and spent her time wisely. She played when she had to play and worked when she had to work. Hawk had one major guiding principle; the lazy do not reap because they don’t sow.

The Hen on the other hand lived solely for the moment. She was lazy, disorganized and did not manage her time at all. Hen made many poor choices, she lazed about when it was time to work, and when she did work, she was absent minded and did a poor job of everything. She played when it was time to work and worked when it was time to sleep. In-spite of Hawk’s many attempts to teach Hen some discipline, the Hen remained the Hen and didn’t budge. Her choices remained her choices and didn’t change.
Dance To The Music Of The Choices You Make Today
The Hawk and the Hen both loved music and dance very much. They attended many community dances together and enjoyed themselves indeed. One day Hawk told Hen, “lets make a drum, our very own, so we can make music whenever we want.” In typical fashion, Hen readily agreed to the idea, ” Yes! Let’s make a drum, big and tight with a booming sound. What a wonderful idea!” Hen gleefully replied.
But when it was time to put in the work to make the drum with a booming sound, Hen was not prepared to put in any effort at all. “Hen let us go into the forest and cut some trees for our drum.” Hawk told Hen on their day off work. “But today is my day off, and I’m supposed to rest, I cannot go cutting trees on my day off! Besides I feel sick.” Hen replied.
“What about you sharpen your axe and machete for me while I get ready to go? It will save me some time, your axe is better than mine.” Hawk patiently replied. “Oh no! I cannot!” Hen said, “I don’t feel well and when I’m not well, all my tools are equally not well.”
“Your choice Hen, your choice. That is the choice you make today and it will shape your world tomorrow.” Hawk retorted as she picked her tools and headed for the forest.
The Lazy Do Not Reap Because They Don’t Sow
Hawk returned with the choicest pieces of tree trunks cut into stumps, carefully selected to make the best possible drum. Again she invited the playing Hen, “girl, come help me hollow this stump, so we can finish our drum in time.” But the hen was in no mood to invest in the drum, ” I am busy playing, I cannot help you today. Maybe tomorrow.”
“Those are your choices today, Hen the choices you make today will impact you tomorrow. Don’t forget.” But the hen didn’t budge.
Hawk hollowed the tree trunks by herself and and covered the hollow with sheepskin and tightened it really well. Then she decorated her drum with drawings and and beautiful ornaments. At the end of her day of hard work, Hawk had two beautiful drums that sounded majestic to the ear.
“Hurray our drums are ready!” Hen declared. “Nope, my drum is ready. You made your choices and I made mine”, replied Hawk, “do not touch those drums under any circumstance, if yo do our friendship may end or worse.”
Indolence Begets Poverty
One day Hen feigned sickness and whiles the Hawk was away, she had a field day with the drums.
“Krekete Sooya. Krekete sooya. My Friend’s little drum. I can play and play and play!” Hen sang and beat the drums away.
A long way away, cultivating his land, Hawk heard what he suspected were his drums and rushed home unexpectedly. Lo and behold, Hen was having a blast playing the drums she didn’t lift a finger to make. Hawk rushed her with a much much fury, she grabbed Hen with her talons, and said, “I will kill you, your foolishness and laziness today. And when I’m done, I’ll bury all three of you under my drum and then I’ll make some good music on your grave!”
Seeing the rare fury on her friend’s face, Hen knew she had touched a raw nerve and so she pleaded, “don’t kill me Hawk, I beg you.”
“Why not? Of what use are you to me you lazy Hen?” The Hawk enquired.
“Because I will give you any chicks I hatch from now on. You can have them for breakfast, lunch or dinner” Hen said.
“Really?” A surprised Hawk asked.
“I swear on my cluck.” The Hen replied.
Indolence Has An Empty Reward
And that is why the hawk constantly stalks the mother Hen, and with every available opportunity, swoops in and takes a chick with wanton desire. The chicks are only suffering the consequences of their ancestor’s choices, and a promise made with no thought at all.
So what choices are you faced with today? Are you doing your best with the opportunities you have or are you being lazy? Which of those choices are you making and have you thought how it may impact you, and generations after you? Will the choices you make today make or mar your future and that of those after you. And so dear friendsI hope you stop to think, and make your choices for today but also for tomorrow.

Thank you Perfect! You are too kind!
I was just thinking about this recently, as we look toward having children. The work we put in today will impact their lives in the years to come. Thanks for your story.
Wonderful story as always! No one is going to benefit from being lazy day in and day out.
I have come across many lazy people who mooch off the hard work of others. It never ceases to amaze me how long they get away with it too!
Great reminder. Hard work will payoff, but not laziness!
Great lesson to live by. We will always reap what we sow and what we do not sow. Thanks for sharing this wisdom.
Powerful story. I think of this as a parent, how our how our choices impact future generations.
Another very powerful message. Even now we see what the impact of previous generations has been, and how our decisions today can have a lasting impact further down the road than we may even imagine.
Powerful story. It wasn’t just laziness, but also deceit and dishonesty in playing the drums when told not to that hurt the hen.
I love the way you impart wisdom through your stories.
Love this. So true. Hard work payoff. As a mom and stepmom I work really hard to guide them the best as I can. I know that I might not see the end result right away, but some day I will. ❤️
Honest hard work will win out every time!
Valuable insight for those that can “hear” you!
This is a wonderful story, and great reminder that the hard work pays off.
